What Makes a Provincial Heritage Site?

May 23 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

$15

Have you ever wondered how a building becomes a designation heritage site in Alberta? Enjoy an evening learning about heritage sites and the issues facing them with Allan Rowe and Stefan Cieslik from the Historic Resources Management Branch of the Government of Alberta.

Since 1975, the Government of Alberta has designated nearly 400 sites as Provincial Historic Resources, ensuring that they will be protected for future generations of Albertans. While these include paleontological, archaeological and natural history sites, most designated resources are buildings, ranging from grand, iconic structures like the Alberta Legislature to modest working-class homes built in the early 1900s. Taken together, these Provincial Historic Resources reflect the wide range of Alberta’s social, political, economic and cultural history.

In this talk, Rowe and Cieslik will provide an overview of Provincial Historic Resource designation – how sites are chosen for consideration, how they are evaluated, and how they are conserved. The talk will highlight case studies from Calgary and southern Alberta to illustrate how staff from the Branch collaborate with building owners and other stakeholders to ensure long-term protection of Alberta’s important historic resources. A Q&A will close out the evening, giving you the chance to ask Rowe and Cieslik your burning questions about heritage sites and historic conservation.
