DESCRIPTION:For one special summer edition\, Hot Dogs & Hot Takes on History becomes Hot Cakes & Hot Takes on History. Diving into a surprising chapter of Calgary’s visual history\, we ask a very important question — just how much shirtless cowboy photography can one city produce before people start asking questions?  \nHistorian and author Kevin Allen returns to explore the world of “beefcake” imagery that flourished around the Calgary Stampede throughout the twentieth century. Originally created to celebrate rugged masculinity\, athleticism\, and the ideal western man\, these photographs often featured remarkably sculpted cowboys\, ranch hands\, and athletes posing in various states of undress.  \nKevin examines photographs\, advertisements\, postcards\, and popular culture\, and how these images reflect changing ideas about gender\, masculinity\, and desire. Along the way\, he’ll explore how queer audiences found meaning in images that were never intended for them\, and why some of Calgary’s most iconic symbols of masculinity have aged into something unexpectedly homoerotic.  \nThis conversation is a reminder that history is rarely as straightforward as it appears — and that sometimes the most revealing stories are hidden in plain sight\, usually without a shirt.

The jingle cones behind the iconic sound have been made from repurposed and recycled materials since at least the 18th century. Historically used as decoration on clothing and jewelry\, now they typically adorn beautiful jingle dresses at powwows.   \nIn this workshop\, Saulteaux-Métis artist Rey-J Horsefall and Métis artist Arlan LaVallee-Nairn will teach guests the historical and modern Indigenous use of jingle cones. Using metalsmithing and cold smithing techniques\, Rey-J and Arlan will walk you through the hands-on process of cutting and shaping jingle cones to create a unique jingle cone keychain.   \nWorkshop includes materials\, instruction\, and admission to The Confluence Cultural Centre.

DESCRIPTION:Finger weaving and knotting have been a part of Indigenous culture for thousands of years. During the Fur Trade\, this crafting method was used by the Métis to make sashes that served as a useful and multipurpose tool. These sashes became tailored to specific patterns and colours representative of different families before became a standardized symbol of Métis pride during the 1885 Northwest Resistance. The Métis sash is now a cultural item representing pride in lineage and tradition.  \nIn this afternoon workshop\, create mini sash keychains by following Métis-style finger weaving techniques!
