SUMMARY:Métis-style Finger Weaving Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Finger weaving and knotting have been a part of Indigenous culture for thousands of years. During the Fur Trade\, this crafting method was used by the Métis to make sashes that served as a useful and multipurpose tool. These sashes became tailored to specific patterns and colours representative of different families before became a standardized symbol of Métis pride during the 1885 Northwest Resistance. The Métis sash is now a cultural item representing pride in lineage and tradition.  \nIn this afternoon workshop\, create mini sash keychains by following Métis-style finger weaving techniques! Taught by Métis artist Arlan LaVallee-Nairn and Saulteaux-Métis artist Rey-J Horsefall\, you’ll learn about the historical and modern uses of Métis-style finger weaving\, the meaning behind the striking colours\, and how the sash became the cultural item it is known as today.  \nWorkshop includes materials\, instruction\, and admission to The Confluence Cultural Centre.
