SUMMARY:Hot Dogs & Hot Takes on History: Whose City is This?
DESCRIPTION:Whose City is This? – with Alice Lam \nDate: Thursday\, June 19 | 7-8:30 pm\nCost: $15\nAges: 13+ \nChinatown is more than a neighbourhood; it’s a story of resilience. Built\, erased\, and rebuilt again\, it stands as a testament to how communities can thrive despite oppressive systems. But not every community got the same shot. \nAt the next Hot Dogs and Hot Takes\, sit down with community powerhouse Alice Lam to dig into the past and present of grassroots advocacy in Calgary. From the Chinese community’s survival through systemic racism and redlining\, to the political roadblocks thrown up by figures like James Short\, Alice is unpacking the fight to keep Chinatown alive. \nAlice will also look at what Chinatown represents for other racialized communities\, many of whom still face displacement\, segregation\, generational trauma\, and a lack of access to land\, funding\, and support. Expect a bold\, eye-opening conversation about the racist roots of Calgary’s institutions\, the role of nonprofits in fighting back\, and how we can carve out more autonomous\, culturally vibrant spaces across the city. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet tickets

SUMMARY:What Makes a Provincial Heritage Site?
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how a building becomes a designation heritage site in Alberta? Enjoy an evening learning about heritage sites and the issues facing them with Allan Rowe and Stefan Cieslik from the Historic Resources Management Branch of the Government of Alberta. \nSince 1975\, the Government of Alberta has designated nearly 400 sites as Provincial Historic Resources\, ensuring that they will be protected for future generations of Albertans. While these include paleontological\, archaeological and natural history sites\, most designated resources are buildings\, ranging from grand\, iconic structures like the Alberta Legislature to modest working-class homes built in the early 1900s. Taken together\, these Provincial Historic Resources reflect the wide range of Alberta’s social\, political\, economic and cultural history. \nIn this talk\, Rowe and Cieslik will provide an overview of Provincial Historic Resource designation – how sites are chosen for consideration\, how they are evaluated\, and how they are conserved. The talk will highlight case studies from Calgary and southern Alberta to illustrate how staff from the Branch collaborate with building owners and other stakeholders to ensure long-term protection of Alberta’s important historic resources. A Q&A will close out the evening\, giving you the chance to ask Rowe and Cieslik your burning questions about heritage sites and historic conservation.

SUMMARY:Hot Dogs & Hot Takes on History: We Can Judge People from the Past
DESCRIPTION:Can we judge past individuals by today’s moral standards? It’s often argued that it’s unfair to apply modern standards to historical figures. However\, the spectrum of moral beliefs is often present regardless of what was socially accepted at the time. Current “woke” moral standards aren’t revolutionary; they’ve been present throughout human history. \nHistorically\, it is rare for those in power to make significant and complex decisions in a moral vacuum. Most historical figures knew the full picture and had the necessary information to make moral decisions that left a long-lasting impact. It comes down to the power a person holds\, their capacity for good\, and their ability to choose what do to with information available to them. So yes\, we can judge people from the past for their lack of moral consideration when they made decisions that negatively contributed to the state of society today. \nThis May at Hot Dogs & Hot Takes on History\, city councillor and educator Courtney Walcott will explore why we should judge complex figures from our past by current moral standards. Courtney will examine how morals have been shaped over time\, who defines them\, who benefits from them\, and how when history turns to myth and memorial\, such as the complex story of the Famous Five\, we give away our own capacity to learn from complex histories and reflect on the legacies of our own choices today.
